Hi Peter,
You said (in your Observer article) that you'd like to hear from anyone who went to the Essaouira festival. I was there and it was really great. Highlights for me were Band of Gnawa - a fusion of rock and Gnaoua - and Maalem Mustapha Bakbou - both featuring French rock guitarist Louis Bertignac. Audience favourites, I think, were Moroccan group Hoba Hoba Spirit, and they're certainly the top download on my YouTube channel.
Oh yes, I recorded loads of the music and you can listen at my YouTube Channel or get a more structured view with my comments and a couple of podcasts on my blog
